Overview

A strong focus is placed on practical skills development through laboratory work, on-farm training, and field attachments that provide students with real-world experience in animal handling, vaccination, disease surveillance, and farm management. Students also learn how to advise farmers on best practices in feeding, housing, and biosecurity measures that reduce risks and enhance herd performance. The program encourages students to develop strong communication and extension skills so they can effectively support communities in adopting improved livestock production methods.

Graduates of the diploma program are well-equipped for jobs in both the public and private sectors, including roles such as animal health technicians, livestock extension officers, veterinary assistants, and farm supervisors. They can work with government veterinary departments, agricultural development projects, NGOs, or private farms, helping to improve livestock productivity and rural incomes. The diploma also offers a solid foundation for those who want to pursue further studies in animal science, veterinary medicine, or related fields, supporting the growth of the livestock industry and sustainable agriculture.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the Diploma in Animal Health and Production, graduates will have the practical knowledge and skills to identify, prevent, and manage common animal health issues and production challenges. They will be able to perform basic diagnostic procedures, administer treatments and vaccinations, and implement herd health programs that boost livestock productivity and welfare. Students will also develop competencies in animal breeding, nutrition, housing, and pasture management, enabling them to provide practical solutions that improve herd performance and farm profitability.

In addition to technical expertise, graduates will gain vital skills in extension services and farmer training, enabling them to effectively communicate and promote best practices in animal health and production. They will be prepared to work closely with farmers and communities to implement sustainable livestock management strategies that support food security and income generation. With this solid foundation, graduates will be ready to contribute meaningfully to the livestock sector and rural development or pursue further studies in animal science, veterinary medicine, or related fields.
